AJ handing flyers to A-sharp

The Saint Motel flyers were hand-drawn. They handed them out to people milling about on the blocked-off streets of downtown Austin.

The ban's van is a massive old American number. Its design and ride seemed to be nautically inspired.

A few images from last night

1. A train crossing. The automated gate was broken, so there was a man who stopped traffic and lit flares on the road just prior to the train's arrival. 2. My cousin AJ (of the band Saint Motel), Hilary (of Bella Koshka) and a very cool mountain-country-is band performing in the street after 2am. It's probably hard to tell, but the guy on the right is strumming a long string connected to a garbage can as a resonance chamber. It worked surprisingly well. 3. The aftermath of a chicken fight. Woulda been a photo of an actual chicken fight if the iPhone's camera app didn't take so long to be ready to take a photo.

One more Lotus photo from yesterday, just for fun

What a great car. Structure of extruded aluminum, fiberglass body, lightweight (1950 lbs), V4 Toyota engine, ridiculous cornering, gets 40mpg if driven at the speed limit on the freeway (not that this is a likely use of the vehicle).

Breakfast and a run

Had a lovely breakfast at the Kerbey Lane Cafe (in photo: remaining bits of a gingerbread pancake and a buttermilk instance of said food item), followed by a run around Town Lake (Aka Lady Bird Lake). The "lake" is actually a dammed-off section of the Colorado river, and is a fantastic run. Sorry to post such a crap photo for the lake portion of my day-in-progress. I have better pics of it on a non-iPhone camera from Tuesday that I'll post when back in LA.

Things I saw in Texas: Pink Escalade

This has just got to be a Mary Kay salesperson's car. Pink elephants on parade.

A trip to get BBQ, in style, in Texas

I went on a trip with David in his Lotus to get some BBQ for lunch. I'd written a magnum opus on the journey and this iPhone multiple-photo email app crashed while sending, and I don't feel like retyping it all. So here's an executive summary:

We drove to Rudy's Country Store And BBQ, taking turns marked 30 at 80. That car corners so well it seems almost a safe thing to do. We ate a bunch of meat on white bread. It was good. We drove home to find the cat basking in a beam of light. Cute.

Y-Love at the Beauty Bar, SXSW, Austin TX

Interesting to randomly show up to a show and see two good Jewish rappers in a row (Ephryme, then Y-Love, both backed by Diwon). Good stuff. I kinda wish there were actual turntables in the back just for the aesthetic rather than a tiny laptop. Still, a good show, and more tsitsis than I'm used to seeing on a stage.

One highlight –an audience member handed Y-Love a drink.  He checked it out, paused and did a little blessing onstage (for those in the know, I believe it was probably שהכל) before imbibing. As someone who went to a grade school that had not just a spelling bee but also a "bracha bee", I would have enjoyed this had I been paying attention at that particular moment. I can thank my 3rd-cousin-in-law Julia for pointing it out. It's still a highlight even if I missed it.

3 things I learned at George Bush Intercontinental Airport

1. There's a George Bush Intercontinental Airport?!

2. There are 3 Peet's coffee storefronts in the great state of Texas. 2 of those are in the George H W Bush Intercntl Airport, one in B terminal, one in C. Go Bush Sr.!

3. Homeland Security sez: We're at code Orange. Keep an eye out for suspiciously tasty citrus fruit and sunsets that shock and awe.

On a serious note, I was a little surprised to hear all that homeland security code mishegas announced on the airport PA. What am I, the average person, to do when notified of such a code? It made some sense from an Orwellian standpoint a few years back, but now? I'm not saying there are no threats out there, I'm just saying that this warning system serves no purpose. Gov't, please take whatever funds are used to decide the terrorist threat Pantone color of the day, and put that money instead towards tracking nuclear materials around the world. Thanks.

Peet's!
